The crater has continuously burned since the time of discovery of the geologists and set on fire in 1971. Their ways of setting it on fire are to keep the methane gas not to spread. Russian Engineers found out the area in 1971, Initially, their idea it was a large oil field. To estimate the quantity of available oil in the area, engineers construct a rig and having operations.
Nevertheless, since the area has a plenty of gas, the ground underneath the camp and the drilling of rig fall apart and resulting to a huge crater. Expecting that poisonous gasses may be released from the gigantic pothole to the nearby towns, the smart engineers concluded to burn the gas. The engineers calculated the gas to burn off in the duration of a few weeks but surprisingly it is continuously burning for more than 4 decades presently.
This Derweze crater was highlighted in the "Crater of Fire" episode of "Die Trying". George Kournis, an explorer was the first man to ever land at the bottom of the crater, where he gathered samples of extremophiles microorganisms. This event was on view on the National Geographic Channel last 2014. What is your idea about this burning hole in the planet's surface? What would you like to propel into it?
